- Big celebration at Rome Fiumicino Airport to mark the 100 millionth passenger: a historic milestone, symbolizing the airline’s growth in Italy
- In over 21 years of market presence, the airline has already transported almost twice the population of Italy
- Italy’s third-largest airline celebrates this achievement by rewarding one lucky passenger with a special voucher and an exclusive 10% discount on all flights to and from Italy
Wizz Air, EMEA’s most environmentally sustainable airline*, celebrated an extraordinary milestone today at Rome Fiumicino Airport: the achievement of 100 million passengers transported in Italy since the start of operations in the country.
This historic result further strengthens the central role of Italy – the largest market by capacity in Wizz Air’s entire network – and confirms Rome Fiumicino as the beating heart of the airline’s operations in the peninsula.
The 100 millionth passenger was honored with a special event at the departure gate for the Rome–Malaga flight. To celebrate, passengers on the flight were welcomed with free refreshments, a celebratory cake, and a festive atmosphere at the gate. The lucky traveler also received a €500 voucher valid on any route across the airline’s network. But the celebrations don’t stop there: on June 17, more Wizz Air surprises will celebrate this special moment in the streets of Rome. To mark the milestone, the airline also launched an exclusive 10% discount on all flights to and from Italy, valid across its entire network – but only for June 10.
“We are extremely excited and proud to celebrate our 100 millionth passenger in Italy – a milestone that demonstrates travelers’ trust and the strength of our growth strategy in the country. Italy is now one of the most important markets for Wizz Air globally and a top priority in our long-term investment plans” said Andras Rado, Head of Communications at Wizz Air. “Rome Fiumicino, in particular, is a key base for our airline – not only for the volume of operations and passengers, but also for the strategic role it plays in connecting Italy with some of the most in-demand destinations in Europe and beyond. We will continue to focus on this market with determination, further expanding our offering and strengthening our local presence.”
With over 200 routes to and from Italy, Wizz Air continues to reinforce its presence across the country. In 2024 alone, the airline operated over 91,000 flights to and from Italy, with a completion rate of 99.5%, transporting over 18 million passengers (+11.6% compared to 2023), reaching today’s milestone of 100 million passengers since operations began in 2004.
Within this context, Rome Fiumicino – one of only twelve airports in the world with a 5-star Skytrax rating for outstanding service quality, and recently ranked among Skytrax’s World’s Top 10 Airports – has always been a key base for Wizz Air, in Italy and beyond. Today, the airline operates 60 routes from Fiumicino to 25 countries, with strategic connections and destinations that are among the most popular for both Italian and international travelers. For the 2025 Summer Schedule, Wizz Air has further strengthened Rome’s connectivity by increasing weekly frequencies to the most requested European and Mediterranean destinations – such as London, Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon – as well as classic summer hotspots like Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini, and Zakynthos.
“We are delighted that Wizz Air chose Rome to celebrate such a prestigious national milestone – further proof of the strategic role Fiumicino plays in the development of air traffic in our country” said Federico Scriboni, Director of Aviation Business Development at Aeroporti di Roma. “We want to congratulate Wizz Air on reaching its first 100 million passengers transported in Italy and on the remarkable growth path it has taken.”
Rome is in fact Wizz Air’s largest base in Italy, and the airline’s growth at the Roman airport is also supported by significant investments: on the infrastructure side, with the ultramodern Training Center active since October 1, 2024; and on the operational side, with continuous route launches and increased frequencies on high-demand routes.
With over 600 jobs created in Rome and a fleet of 13 Airbus A321neo aircraft stationed there – the most sustainable in their category – Wizz Air continues to invest in the capital and the country, currently operating over 200 routes to 80 destinations in 30 countries, offering more than 13 million seats.
These numbers confirm Italy as Wizz Air’s primary market and Rome Fiumicino as one of the airline’s most dynamic and strategic bases, both nationally and across Europe.
*According to the CAPA – Centre for Aviation Awards for Excellence 2022-2024, which benchmarks global airlines emissions intensity data and positions Wizz Air as the airline with the lowest co2 per RPK compared to other global and European airlines.
