RECOGNITION COMES AMID INDUSTRY-WIDE PUSH FOR NET-ZERO TRANSFORMATION
Wizz Air has once again been named the “Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline” by the World Finance Sustainability Awards in 2025. This marks the airline’s fifth consecutive win, cementing its role as a leader in aviation as the industry accelerates efforts to improve environmental performance.
The World Finance judging panel, supported by AI-driven research capabilities, identified Wizz Air as the 2025 winner for its global sustainability leadership, including active participation in the Alliance for Zero Emission Aviation (AZEA), and for advocating transformative climate policies at major events such as COP29.
Wizz Air continues to operate with the lowest carbon emissions per passenger kilometre: in financial year 2024*, it recorded an average of just 52 grams of CO₂ per passenger kilometre—well below industry averages**—thanks to a strong fleet renewal strategy and operational excellence. Over 61% of the fleet consisted of the highly-efficient Airbus A321neo aircraft, delivering 20% lower fuel burn and 50% less noise compared to previous models. With an average fleet age of just 4.7 years, Wizz Air operates one of the youngest fleets globally.
Yvonne Moynihan, Corporate and ESG Officer at Wizz Air, said: “We are honoured to have received this prestigious recognition for the fifth year in a row. Wizz Air’s approach to sustainability is built into every aspect of our operations, from advanced fuel efficiency to our investment in future-facing technologies. As articulated in our recently launched Net Zero Roadmap (flying towards net zero), We believe the path to net-zero in aviation depends on collaborative innovation—across policymakers, fuel producers, and the aviation ecosystem as a whole.”
The airline's growing investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) was another key differentiator.. Wizz Air adopted an aspiration to power its flights by at least 10% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030—according to current EU mandates—and is forming equity partnerships with SAF developers to scale long-term production.
Additional points were awarded for operational innovations, including the use of lighter aircraft components, smart fuel management systems, and procedures like single-engine taxiing and the use of electric ground power, which together contribute to meaningful fuel savings.

- Anchored in four key pillars - Product, Price, Service and Communication - the Customer First Compass outlines Wizz Air’s future direction and renewed commitment to its customers, from investing in state-of-the-art technology, improving reliability, and delivering enhanced customer support. The transformation marks a step change in how the airline services its customers. The airline will be investing €14 billion over the next three years to enhance every customer touchpoint to ensure that punctuality, affordability, innovation and service shape every journey.
- Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) encompasses synthetic aviation fuels, aviation biofuels, and recycled carbon aviation fuels, as outlined in the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation. SAF has the potential to lower overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through a life-cycle analysis, compared to traditional jet fuel. However, it does not reduce emissions at the tailpipe; the reduction is achieved during the production process. Although SAF represents a promising avenue for cutting aviation emissions, there are significant hurdles in scaling up its production and availability, making it currently 3 to 4 times more costly. Presently, SAF constitutes only a minor fraction of the fuel used by commercial airlines. The ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation aims to boost the use of SAF to mitigate aviation CO2 emissions.
- All Wizz Air flights are operated on Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 seats, Airbus A320neo with 186 seats, A321 aircraft with 230 seats and Airbus A321neo aircraft with 239 seats.
