- The airline confirms the strategic role of its Fiumicino base with increased frequencies on 5 existing routes, complementing the recently announced new connections to Glasgow, Bordeaux and Brasov.
- One additional aircraft from March 2026, nearly five hundred thousand additional seats, over 50+ new direct jobs and 350 indirect jobs in associated industries.
Wizz Air, EMEA’s most environmentally sustainable airline*, is taking another step forward in its Roman growth story with a significant increase in frequencies from its Rome Fiumicino base. This new investment adds nearly half a million seats per year, supported by the deployment from March 2026 of one additional Airbus A321neo aircraft, and generates both direct and indirect employment in the region. This strategic decision underscores the importance of the Italian capital within the airline’s network and responds to growing travel demand, offering greater flexibility and choice for passengers.
The recent success of special initiatives, such as the "Let's Get Lost" mystery flight that departed from Fiumicino and landed in Chișinău, Moldova, demonstrates the airline’s commitment to offering unique travel experiences and reinforcing its position in the Roman market. The increase comes just a month after the announcement of three new destinations from Fiumicino: Glasgow, Bordeaux and Brasov. With Bordeaux joining the network as a brand-new station, these additions highlight Wizz Air’s ongoing commitment to expand Rome’s connectivity and consolidate its position as a key base within its European network.
This strategic investment is not limited to adding flights but also offers travellers, both business and leisure, greater flexibility in planning their journeys. By strengthening existing routes, Wizz Air is responding to strong market demand and consolidating its commitment to offering convenient and widespread travel solutions. The increased frequencies, which have particularly affected routes to destinations such as London Luton, Málaga, Tel Aviv, Valencia and Sharm el-Sheikh expand access to numerous destinations, facilitating essential connections for tourism and trade and consolidating Rome's position as a reference hub in the airline's network.
This announcement directly follows Vueling’s downsizing in Rome. Wizz Air has optimized its schedule to cater to the void left behind and support Italian passengers, increasing frequencies on key routes such as Malaga, Alicante, London Luton, as well as maintaining connections to Barcelona, Bilbao, Ibiza, Mykonos, Santorini, Paris Orly, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia, while also launching a recruitment plan with dedicated pilot hiring events in October.
This initiative confirmed Wizz Air’s dual commitment in line with its Customer First Compass initiative – a €14 billion investment plan over the next three years to improve the passenger experience, continuously expand the network, and offer innovative services: to protect passengers’ travel plans, offering new and affordable travel solutions, and to boost local economy creating new career opportunities in the Italian capital.
"The addition of the fourteenth aircraft and the increase in frequencies on routes already operating from Rome Fiumicino confirms the strategic importance of our base in the Capital, one of the most dynamic and central in Wizz Air's international network," said Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air. "Fiumicino is our most important Italian base and it’s also important for our growth in the country. Our choice to focus on frequencies responds directly to the needs of the Roman market. We will continue to work to ensure the best travel experience, as demonstrated by special initiatives like our recent 'Let's Get Lost' flight that departed from Rome, which offered a unique and unexpected experience. We are truly convicted that Roman passengers will appreciate and reward our commitment to the city, and we are ready to welcome them on board and give them the best travel experience possible! Let’s WIZZ more and more, Rome!"
Rome Fiumicino is the largest Italian base in the Wizz Air network and represents a strategic asset for international leisure and business flows. Currently, the airline operates 63 routes from Fiumicino to 25 countries, with a comprehensive offering that includes some of the most requested European destinations and summer getaways in the Mediterranean. In total from Italy, the airline operates more over 240 routes across 32 countries and has a fleet of 26 Airbus A321neo aircraft based, operating from and to 22 airports in the country.
