- The airline’s fist aircraft maintenance center in Romania and an essential development for local operations, the facility will further enhance Wizz Air’s maintenance capabilities in the county and the broader region
- This investment and partnership with Romaero highlights the airline’s commitment for the Romanian market and its passengers, also supporting job creation
Bucharest, 14 July 2025: Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, and Romaero, the local leader in Aerospace and Defense, today have announced in a joint press conference the opening of a maintenance center solely dedicated to the maintenance of Wizz Air’s aircraft at Romaero’s facility, next to Baneasa International Airport. With new aircraft already announced to join the Bucharest Băneasa, Sibiu, Suceava and Timisoara bases until the end of this year alone, Wizz Air is set to operate a local fleet of 43 aircraft in the upcoming winter season. Thus, Romania will continue to host the largest fleet in Wizz Air’s network, with more aircraft based locally than in any other country. This first center of its kind in Romania marks a strategic milestone for Wizz Air, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to the local market and its role in supporting aviation sector developments and job creation across the region.
Maintenance services at the Baneasa Maintenance Center will be operated starting from October this year. By securing maintenance slots positions in Romania, this investment will improve operational efficiency and enhance the maintenance portfolio in the region. This partnership with Romaero represents a significant development for the airline, as securing timely maintenance slots across Europe in the current market can pose challenges, especially during peak travel periods. With access to its dedicated maintenance facilities, Wizz Air will streamline operations, minimize downtime and ensure priority service, enhancing both efficiency and reliability across our Romanian and European fleet.
The Maintenance Center will carry the airline’s activities scheduled for heavy maintenance, such as engine changes, as well as light maintenance, including regular checkups and annual inspections, for Romanian based aircraft and those coming from neighbouring countries. For carrying of the aircraft maintenance work, Wizz Air has signed a three-year contract with a certified maintenance organization that also supports Wizzair in other locations in Italy and Albania, and together with Romaero specialized resources will concentrate operational efforts to deliver high quality services to the Wizz Air fleet.
Speaking at the press conference in Bucharest, Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, said: “The opening of our first dedicated maintenance center in Romania is a strategic leap forward for Wizz Air. After inaugurating our base at Baneasa Airport back in April, and announcing a second aircraft just last week, we are pleased to be able to come with another important local development. It reflects our deep commitment to the Romanian market and strengthens our operational capabilities in the region. With the largest fleet in our network already based here, this investment ensures greater efficiency, reliability and support for our continued growth, proudly aligned with our 14-billion euros «Customer First Compass» transformation plan. We are also proud to further contribute to local, highly skilled job creation in a critical part of the aviation supply chain, and continue to foster the long-term development of Romanian aviation.”
Since the start of its Romanian operations in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily increased its investment in Romania, recognizing the country as a pivotal market. Currently, the airline will have 204 routes from 13 Romanian airports for sale, connecting passengers to 75 destinations across 25 countries. Over the past 19 years, Wizz Air has established eight operational bases in Bucharest Baneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iasi, Sibiu, Suceava and Timisoara. The airline employs more than 1,600 people in Romania.
