Heraklion, the vibrant capital of Crete, is home to the ancient Knossos Palace, a remarkable archaeological site that offers a glimpse into the Minoan civilization’s rich history. The city’s lively market, impressive Venetian fortress, and museums further immerse visitors in its unique cultural heritage. Exploring outside the city limits, Crete, the largest Greek island, boasts stunning landscapes ranging from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Known for its exceptional cuisine, Crete offers delicious dishes like moussaka, dakos, and local cheeses that showcase the island’s culinary traditions.
Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, said: “We are proud to launch yet another connection from Cluj-Napoca, soon after our latest announcement of the Castellon route last month. Thus, the newest Heraklion flights commencing this June underline our commitment to offer passengers convenient and affordable travel options, even for their much-awaited summer holidays. As the largest airline in Romania, Wizz Air reaffirms its long-term commitment to the market”.
David Ciceo, CEO, Cluj International Airport, said: “We appreciate Wizz Air’s decision to operate another sunny destination from Cluj International Airport to Greece, namely Crete-Heraklion. In previous years, Wizz Air has operated vacation destinations to Greece, such as Crete-Chania, Corfu and Zakynthos. The new destination to Crete-Heraklion consolidates the tourist offer of Cluj International Airport’s route network and we are confident that in 2025, the summer season will bring a further increase in the number of passengers, thus contributing to the development of tourism and the economy of the entire region”.
The route will replace the existing connection between Cluj-Napoca and Chania. Being the main entry point to the island, Heraklion airport will be providing convenient access to the capital and the rest of Crete for travellers. With this announcement, Wizz Air is proud to offer 37 destinations in 14 countries from Cluj-Napoca, enhancing connectivity and travel options for local and near-by passengers. By fostering job growth and boosting tourism, Wizz Air demonstrates its commitment to supporting the development Romania’s travel industry and its overall economic landscape.
