Nearly five million passengers have flown with the airline to and from the seaside capital over the past eight years
Wizz Air, the most environmentally sustainable airline in the Europe, Middle East, and Asia region*, together with Varna Airport, celebrated the official resumption of direct flights to Milan Bergamo last night – one of Europe’s most popular hubs for fashion, culture, and business. The event also marked the eights anniversary of Wizz Air’s base in Varna from which Wizz Air has transported nearly 5 million passengers to date. The celebration took place at the newly opened Gate Garden at Terminal 2 – the first open-air gate area of its kind in Europe.
To mark the anniversary, eight lucky passengers on the first flight to the Italian city found “pink tickets”– a 20 EUR Wizz Air voucher styled like a Willy Wonka “Golden Ticket”, which can be used for future travel across the Wizz Air network.
The new connection to Northern Italy will operate twice a week – every Tuesday and Saturday – providing travelers with easy access to the fashion capital, whether for leisure or business trips.
Over the years, the Varna base has established itself as a key driver of air connectivity in the Northern Black Sea region. Since its launch in 2017, the route network has continually expanded and now includes over 10 European destinations – among them London, Brussels, Tel Aviv, Hamburg, and Eindhoven. A new route to Bratislava is set to launch on November 15. In spring 2025, Wizz Air stationed a second Airbus A321neo aircraft in Varna, increasing capacity, creating new employment opportunities, and offering passengers even more travel options.
“The resumption of flights to Milan Bergamo is an important step in expanding our network from Varna and a wonderful way to celebrate eight years of successful operations in the seaside capital,” said Anastasia Novak, Manager of Corporate Sustainability and Communications at Wizz Air. “ The symbolic surprise with the ‘pink tickets’ is our way of thanking the passengers who choose to fly with us and adding a dash of fun to their journey. Let’s WIZZ together to new destinations!”
Michael Reuss, CEO of Fraport Twin Star, added: "Wizz Air has been a valued partner of Varna Airport since its first flight in 2007. Together, we have celebrated important milestones – the opening of their base in Varna, the basing of a second aircraft and, hopefully soon, a third. Since 2018, Wizz Air has been the market leader here, with nearly five million passengers travelling with the airline to and from Varna. We are proud that Varna Airport is among Wizz Air's bases with the highest performance in terms of punctuality – a true reflection of our shared commitment to operational excellence. Today, we are particularly pleased with the long-awaited resumption of flights to Milan Bergamo and look forward to continuing to strengthen this successful partnership."
Wizz Air continues to invest in the development of its Varna base, creating jobs and contributing to the region’s economic growth. This year alone, Wizz Air has operated over 2500 flights to and from Varna, completing 99.3% of them.. The airline holds a 39% market share in the city and has carried nearly450000 passengers in 2025 alone, solidifying its position as a leading carrier in the region.
*According to CAPA – Centre for Aviation Awards for Excellence 2022–2024, which compares emission intensity data of airlines worldwide and recognises Wizz Air as the airline with the lowest CO2 emissions per RPK compared to other global and European carriers.
